The overtime pay formula
Overtime pay = hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Under federal law, overtime hours are the hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Your gross pay for the week is 40 × your rate, plus the overtime pay. With double time, those hours are paid at 2 × your rate.
Example: 46 hours at $20 an hour. Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. The 6 overtime hours are paid at $30, so $180. Gross pay is $980.

Who is entitled to overtime?
The Fair Labor Standards Act covers most US employees. Unless you are exempt, you must get at least one and a half times your regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Your employer cannot average two weeks to avoid it. Exemptions mostly apply to salaried executive, administrative and professional staff who meet both a salary test and a duties test.
California daily overtime and double time
California pays time and a half for hours over 8 in a workday and over 40 in a workweek. It pays double time for hours over 12 in a workday. On the seventh consecutive day worked in a workweek, the first 8 hours are paid at time and a half and anything beyond 8 at double time. Hours already paid as daily overtime are not counted again toward the 40.

Common questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour. Then multiply that by your overtime hours: 6 overtime hours at $27 is $162.
Is overtime after 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week?
Under federal law it is after 40 hours in a workweek, with no daily limit. A few states, including California, also require overtime after a set number of hours in a day. Choose "Hours each day" and a rule with a daily limit to see that version.
Do paid holidays and sick days count toward overtime?
Under the federal rule, overtime is based on hours actually worked, so paid time off for holidays, vacation or sickness usually does not count toward the 40 hours. Some employers and union contracts count it anyway. Enter only hours worked unless your policy says otherwise.
Why might my real overtime rate be higher than 1.5 times my base rate?
Overtime is based on your "regular rate", which includes shift differentials and certain bonuses and commissions, not just your base hourly wage. Enter a night or weekend differential in the "Shift differential" box and the calculator pays overtime on the higher rate. Bonuses can raise the rate too, which this estimate does not include. Your payroll department can confirm the regular rate it uses.
Are salaried employees paid overtime?
Being paid a salary does not on its own make someone exempt. Exemption usually depends on both salary level and job duties. Many salaried workers are owed overtime. The Department of Labor overtime page explains the exemptions.
