How to convert minutes to decimal hours
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. 8 hours 20 minutes is 8 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.33 hours. To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.33 hours is 8 hours and 0.33 × 60 ≈ 20 minutes.
Quarter hours are the ones to remember: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50 and 45 minutes is 0.75.
Example: a week of hours on payroll
Payroll multiplies decimal hours by the hourly rate. Say the timesheet shows 8:15, 7:45, 9:30, 8:00 and 7:30. In decimal hours those are 8.25, 7.75, 9.50, 8.00 and 7.50, which add up to 41.00 hours. At $18 an hour with 1 hour of overtime at time and a half: 40 × $18 = $720, plus 1 × $27 = $27, so $747 before tax. Adding the clock times as if they were decimals (8.15 + 7.45 + ...) would give the wrong total and the wrong pay.
The guide to calculating hours worked shows how to get each day's hours from start and end times first.

Common questions
What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?
7.75 hours. 45 minutes divided by 60 is 0.75, so 7:45 becomes 7.75.
Is 7.30 hours the same as 7 hours 30 minutes?
No. 7.30 decimal hours is 7 hours and 18 minutes, because 0.30 × 60 = 18. Seven and a half hours is 7.50 in decimal. Mixing these up is the most common payroll error with decimal time.
Why does payroll use decimal hours?
You can multiply decimal hours directly by an hourly rate. 7.75 hours × $20 = $155. You cannot do that with 7:45 without converting it first.
How many decimal places should I use?
Two decimal places is standard for payroll and is what this converter shows. Some time clocks record tenths of an hour (6-minute steps) instead. In that case use the nearest-6-minutes option on the time clock rounding calculator.
